Lung Cancer and Other Thoracic Malignancies
Surgery remains central to the management of early-stage lung cancer and certain other thoracic malignancies. Resection offers the best chance of cure when disease is localized, often via:
Lobectomy
Removal of a lobe — the standard for many early lung cancers.
Pneumonectomy
Removal of an entire lung (less common today)
Segmentectomy or Wedge Resection
Lung-sparing techniques increasingly supported by data in select early cancers
Even in advanced cases, surgery sometimes plays a palliative role — alleviating symptoms such as bleeding, airway obstruction, or pain.
Modern thoracic oncology emphasizes multidisciplinary decision-making, integrating surgery with chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy to maximize survival and preserve quality of life.
